What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin disease that causes the skin to ‘flush’, or blush more easily than other people. There are many types of manifestations of Rosacea and it can appear in various parts of the body. While it may be believed by some that it is just occasional redness, it can become a serious problem if left untreated. There are four types of this condition that affects different parts of the body and have different types of symptoms:
  1. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: This is the redness, flushing and visible blood vessels that show up.
  2. Papulopustular rosacea: acne-like breakouts with flushing
  3. Phymatous rosacea: Thick and bumpy skin
  4. Ocular rosacea: Affects the eye, can develop a sty and be irritated.
If left untreated these types of rosacea can cause real problems and affect the quality of life. While there is no cure for it, there are ways to treat it. Some of the most common ways are: lasers, dermabrasion, and electrocautery. At De Vries Cosmetic Centre, we offer both dermabrasion and laser therapy in order to treat it. In the case of dermabrasion, we use a specialized instrument in order to remove the skin cells and damaged areas. This works to stimulate the healing process, so that the skin can be rejuvenated. However, this process can be an aggressive procedure due to it scraping the skin. Another procedure that can be used to treat rosacea is laser.

At our clinic, we use the Quanta Light A Star: YG Laser when doing this type of treatment. The Quanta Light A Star laser targets the vascular lesions and pigmentation caused by this condition. The laser can be used to deliver lasers to specific areas or the whole face.
Before treatment, I will consult with you to adjust the treatment based on your specific needs. Afterwards, the face is prepped and cleansed to make sure that it is free of all oils that can interfere. During the procedure, I will then apply the laser to pre-determined spots of your face to treat the rosacea. The Quanta Light A Star emits high-intensity lasers that target thick areas of the skin and the blood vessels that create the ‘reddish-blush’ on the cheeks. The lasers then get rid of the rosacea and reduce redness that occurs because of it.

After the treatment, you may experience some redness and feeling of discomfort. This is normal and it usually resolves itself after a few hours to a few days. The downtime is generally minimal and you can resume activities after taking this treatment within a few hours as well. The results of the Quanta Light A Star laser is typically clearer skin and fewer acne-like symptoms that you typically see. It results happen over the course of a few days, but patients do notice clearer skin.
