Medical Weight Loss Management

Weight Loss Management

In keeping with our ethos and our mission, we do not use medical weight loss management at De Vries Cosmetic Centre. Of course it is a very profitable business and the drugs are out there that you surely, if you are looking to lose weight, have heard about and thought about finding a way to get them. At any local weight loss clinic or medical weight loss clinic and even at your primary care provider you could obtain these pills. But what are they and why do we not cash in on this?

We do not cash in on this because we do not want to be that medical facility that is about money, we are absolutely for profit, but we want to be known for our ability and desire to help the community, near and far, achieve their goals in every aspect of their life. For a medical spa/wellness centre, this may sound a bit far-fetched, but truly if you look and feel good, every aspect of your life improves.
The medications on the market today are nothing new. HGH, or human growth hormone, has tenuous claims that are as of yet unproven. In fact HGH for use outside of very specific areas of medicine is not even legal in many countries and many US states. HCG also makes many claims, but does it deliver? The jury is out, and has been deliberating too long to call this a magic bullet. You do have speed, there are doctors who will prescribe amphetamines, but the only thing this does is dampen your appetite and make you a high-strung mess that does not want to eat but runs around burning calories. This is not a healthy lifestyle change but an exchange of a food addiction for a pill addiction.

This brings us to the next groups of medications-one of which I have a very personal interest in and may be using this at our clinic, and this is the latest addition to the arsenal, CONTRAVE. Contrave is actually nothing new. Contrave is naltrexone, an opiate agonist, (opiate agonists attach and bind to pleasure centers in your brain and prevent pleasure derived from doing things that trigger a happy mood in people who eat for a “high” or do drugs and even alcohol). The other part is bupropione, originally an antidepressant, used as Zyban to end nicotine cravings, used off label for anxiety disorder at times, though it actually increases anxiety, and used to treat depression. A side effect is nausea and loss of appetite; this is among the few antidepressants with such an effect. If you are hell-bent on getting Contrave, ask your doctor to prescribe you bupropione and naltrexone, but beware, if you are in an accident or take opiates you can die if the naltrexone wears off and you have high doses of opiates in your system or need opiates under an emergency situation, are pumped full of them and then come to when the naltrexone is wearing off. In this instance, when naltrexone is appropriate, you need to wear a medical alert bracelet telling first responders you are on this medication so they can act appropriately.
So how do you lose weight? EAT. It sounds crazy right? It is not crazy, by nature we are not fat machines, we are fat burning machines, or rather energy burning machines but modern diets have turned us fat. This is not to say some people do not have legitimate underlying medical conditions causing obesity or even simply weight gain, your primary care physician can run a simple battery of tests and let you know if you have any disorder hindering your weight loss efforts.

If you are like most of us, and I myself, recently after my second born, have struggled to lose weight, then you are in good company and should keep reading and live by this free advice. Firstly cut all sugars and all carbs. Atkins is a diet that I would say is ALMOST right; it cuts carbs and watches sugars. That said, it allows for what I call “gateways” back into the world of eating. Likewise most diets do the same. The problem is a sweet, a carb, a sugar, just triggers cravings. If you follow this diet plan, and are medically cleared to do so, very few reasons that you would not be, then you should see significant weight loss start by the second week.
This is what you need to do-STOP EATING YOURSELF TO DEATH. Eat smart, not little. To lose weight you cannot have glycogen stores in the liver. Glycogen is produced and stays in the liver via sugars you eat, whether white sugar, brown sugar, fructose, lactose (yes, fruits, vegetables, and almost all carbohydrates) these stores are used for energy. As long as your body has these stores your fat is not going anywhere. To move the fat you need to start eating right-and it is not immediately easy but gets easier.

So let’s look at what you can eat. Eggs, as many as you want as often as you want, cooked in butter, olive oil and cheese, onions, garlic, spinach and sprouts. Bacon, Canadian, American any variety hat is not cured in any sugars (see label for carbohydrates and sugars). You can eat meats, any kind with butter, garlic and limited vegetables. You can eat fish, including tuna in generous amounts of mayonnaise. You can eat any food that contains 0 sugars and 0 carbs and you can eat as much as you want until you are full. I highly recommend you drink at least 2 liters of water a day, flavored water with no sugar and no carbs is also fine. Teas are fine with Stevia as sweetener. Do this for as long as you want, you may even want to add, after two weeks, a cheat day where you can eat what you want (in moderation) and resume the diet. Never feel deprived because this will lead to binge eating.
Your immediate feelings are going to be depression, this is a sugar crash, after a few days you will feel exhilarated and soon you will feel “empowered”, this is partially because you are now winning the war against food and partially because you are getting a clear mind and feeling lighter mentally and more alert.

Exercising while dieting on this diet can only be good. The reason you are eating what you are is to ensure you do not lose muscle, the body, after about 3 days, should start using fat stores as energy. At this point you will see soft dimpling fat that looks worse, slowly you will see it disappear over weeks to months depending on where you started. Keep in mind the more you have to lose the faster it will come off, the more water you drink the faster it will get flushed out, the more you exercise and keep your mind occupied, the faster it will come off.
If you have kidney disease do not attempt this diet. If you have diabetes please do not attempt this diet without medical supervision. If you need help or advice, you can always schedule a consultation with us or submit your questions and we will be very happy to respond.
If you are an alcohol drinker, we highly advise you stop if you can as alcohol slows your liver and your liver is needed in the weight loss process and most alcohol has sugars in, though many have no carbs and no sugar, but avoiding alcohol is the best bet.

Once you have lost enough to be at a BMI of about 30, give or take, we will be happy to help you get the stubborn fat, cellulite, or stretch marks under control through medical intervention.
